The Amish Basket Maker
The Amish Basket Maker is your source for hand woven baskets and hats, hand stitched quilts, and more. We are the online distributor for five Old Order Amish families that reside in Jefferson County, New York. All the baskets, quilts, and hats from The Amish Basket Maker are woven by Swartzentruber Amish and made with an “old world” attention to detail that cannot be duplicated.
The Swartzentruber Amish
The Swartzentruber sect is one of the more conservative sub-groups of the Old Order Amish. They are the most restrictive when it comes to the use of technology by the members, forbidding members from using things like Velcro and bicycles. This sect relies primarily on farming and raising livestock for food. What they do not consume they often sell at produce stands on the roadside or at farmers markets. In addition to farming, some members of the church are skilled blacksmiths, tanners, basket makers, and carpenters. These craftsmen will also sell their goods and skills to the “English” or outsiders.
In the Fall of 2005 members of this sect relocated from Holmes, Medina, and Wayne Counties in Ohio to Northern New York. The community now consists of 40-50 families and approximately 450 people total.
The Amish Basket Maker is your source for a variety of hand made woven baskets and hats. Each basket from The Amish Basket Maker comes labeled by the family that made it, the year it was made, and the name of the town in New York where the family resides. Amish made furniture is not a style of home decor, it is a tradition. The standard of quality and care that comes along with the label “Amish Made” is second to none. The craftsman that makes your basket doesn’t weave them as a hobby, these baskets are a way of life for the Amish, and the quality, detail, and care that go into them cannot be matched.
We have a variety of woven baskets that are not only great decorative pieces but are also fully functional. All of our baskets are designed with a specific purpose in mind, some are fruit baskets, market baskets, laundry hampers, or pie baskets. You won’t see any labels on product pages, each basket is named after one of the children in the community where our baskets are made.
Baskets come in a variety of finishes and have various accent colors depending on the family that makes them. Because these products are hand-made measurements and dimensions are not machine accurate and may vary by 1/4-1/2 inch.
